The pink diamond is the most elusive and romantic of all diamonds. Like all diamonds, it began as pure carbon. At some point during its formation, or perhaps during its journey to the surface, the diamond crystal lattice was distorted. The carbon atoms were forced out of their perfect alignment, creating what scientists call plastic deformation. This deformation altered the way the diamond absorbs and reflects light.
